Silent e (magic e) games for young readers

A child who reads hat fine but gets stuck on gate or bike is missing the silent-e rule — one of the most common single gaps the Check-Up finds.

What your child will practice

  • How silent e changes the vowel: cap → cape, kit → kite, hop → hope
  • Reading long-vowel words fluently without sounding out every letter
  • Telling short-vowel and long-vowel words apart on sight

One tip that helps at home

Write cap on paper, add an e, and ask what happens — the before/after is what makes the rule click.

Not sure this is the right gap?

The free Reading Check-Up finds exactly which skills your child is missing — and builds a plan that starts with the one that matters most.
